Another blow to the knife industry...

A collaborator gets a national news feature and a staple in the knife world announces it may have to close soon if it doesn't find a suitable buyer...

Hey there,

As the dust settles from Black Friday and Cyber Monday, it’s been a quieter week—perfect for swapping shopping carts for cutting boards and spending more time with family (and maybe smoking some meats). Still, there’s no shortage of cool new drops catching our eye.

On a somber note, though, a cornerstone of the knife world has shared some tough news, reminding us how uncertain things can be and how much a strong community like this one matters.

Let’s do the damn thing!

ICYMI at BDEDC

We’re hard at work wrapping up the year. We have several more drops scheduled with Carry Commission. Trust me when I say you do not want to miss these drops.

With Best Damn EDC, we’re ending the year with our totally unofficial awards for the best knives of the year. Those will be landing closer to Christmas, after which, we’ll all be taking some much-needed time off to recharge and reassess how we’re going to approach the Best Damn EDC channel in 2025. I won’t get into the details now, but I believe you'll appreciate the direction we're taking the channel in the coming year and beyond.

A Final Gift Guide

We released our final gift guide of the year. This list was specifically items that, at the time, were in stock, under $50, and would arrive before Christmas. Since the video is several days old now, I can only guarantee that the items are still under $50, but it’s definitely still worth checking out.

In The News

This week's big story is that Crucible Industries, the very same Crucible that makes all your favorite knife steels, is in danger of closing. On Dec 5, company president, John Shiesley, sent a letter to employees noting financial difficulties and that the company will likely file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. A notice was also filed with the state, stating the company planned to close starting March 5, 2025 and completing just two weeks later. This isn’t the first time the nearly 150-year-old company has filed for bankruptcy or faced hardship, but the future seems bleak for the specialty steel manufacturer unless they can find a suitable buyer before the doors close for good.

Our good friends over at Heat Straps were featured in ABC News' "Made in America Christmas" series, which spotlights small businesses around the country making quality products here in America. If Heat Straps sounds familiar to you, it’s likely because we released a collaborative Pioneer Duffle bag with them earlier this year and I often wear their clothing in videos.

Heat Straps was founded by New Jersey firefighter brothers Jordan and Tyler Lang in 2018. Originally, they made fire-resistant glove straps to assist firefighters and have since expanded into heritage American workwear, all handcrafted in New Jersey using U.S.-sourced materials. Their products, including jackets and coats, are designed for durability and longevity, aiming to be passed down through generations. The Langs, third-generation firefighters, draw inspiration from their father and grandfather, emphasizing pride in creating lasting, American-made gear.

It will initially come in four variants: black and gold, bead blasted, tiger stripe flamed, and flamed titanium. Pricing starts at $195 and while WE said these would launch on Dec 16, they are currently showing as available for preorder on their site.

Blade Show Texas 2025 tickets went on sale this week. The show will take place in Fort Worth, Texas on March 7 and 8 at the Forth Worth Convention Center. Much like its sister show in Atlanta, all the heavy hitters will be in attendance and they’ll be sure to have show exclusives and show prices on the table.

Carry of the Week

Working in the watch industry, I constantly need items to use as props, so I try to keep some interesting looking items on me. This carry is one of the more put together carries I have, but it's missing my Big Idea Fountain EDC in ultem. Overall, I feel like this one's pretty dialed in.
