Don't Miss the Top Gear and Events This Week
Sick new gear, don't-miss events, and thought-provoking videos are just a few highlights from this week in EDC.
Happy Friday. It’s officially November. As the cooler weather rolls in and the harvest and hunting seasons wind down, many communities across Europe and North America historically shifted their focus to tool preparation for the forthcoming year. This period, steeped in the art of blacksmithing and knife-making, marked a time when life slowed agriculturally. Blacksmiths and artisans dedicated their skills to crafting specialized hunting and culinary knives. These knives were more than mere tools; they were treasured family heirlooms, celebrated for their exceptional quality, durability, and aesthetic appeal.
This seasonal focus on creating knives helped elevate the knife trade to a respected craft. Even today, handmade knives, particularly those used for hunting and culinary purposes, are often produced in small, seasonal batches by traditional knifemakers. This November tradition exemplifies a timeless blend of practicality, cultural heritage, and artistry.

From the Community
We’ve been heads down behind the scenes and preparing for Georgia Bushcraft here at Best Damn EDC and Carry Commission, so not much has happened in the way of content this week. So here are some very interesting videos from the community that I thought you might like.
Sharpening a Knife Under a Microscope
Ever wonder what’s happening when you sharpen a knife? No, I mean what’s really happening? Alex at OUTDOORS55 put a knife under a microscope and showed with excruciating detail exactly what happens and it’s really neat. It might also help you understand where you might be going wrong with your own sharpening.
Are Walmart Civivi Knives Actually the Same?
When it was announced that Civivi knives would be available at Walmart, some speculated that the quality would go down or that the Civivi knives sold at Walmart would not be held to the same standards as “normal” Civivi knives. WE Knife assured us that they’d be the exact same knives we’ve come to know and love, but they would only be packaged differently and more widely available. Still, our good friend Melissa put it to the test and also broke out her own microscope.
All The Waxed Jackets
This one isn’t explicitly EDC, but it is getting cooler and who doesn’t love a good waxed canvas jacket? If you want to know about men’s workwear that you’ll only have to buy once, Carl Murawski is your guy. He’s a hell of a guy and an extremely straight shooter. Watch this video before you buy another waxed jacket.

10/29: In collaboration with renowned designer Jared Oeser, Tactile Knife Co released its second slip joint knife, The Ranger. It boasts a 3.15” (80 mm) MagnaCut bowie-style blade, a Westinghouse micarta shield, and titanium hardware and handles. It’s a perfect blend of modern and traditional. Having carried one myself, it’s clear that Tactile Knife Co. is stepping up its game with each new release. The Ranger will set you back $349. |
11/29: Here at Carry Commission, we restocked the Olive Pueblo version of our most popular wallet, the Rustic Heirloom Hitchhiker. This has been my go-to wallet for over two years and they’re typically pretty hard to get. So if you’ve been in the market for a Hitchhiker, now is your chance. There are just a few left in stock. Grab one while they last. |
10/29: Just in time for Halloween, WESN dropped the Blacked Out Bornas in a limited quantity on its site. Previously, that version of the small fixed blade had only been available via Kickstarter. The Bornas, featuring a 2.75” (70 mm) S35VN blade, ships with a kydex sheath, is made in Sweden, and will set you back $225. If you’re not a fan of the blacked-out look, the Bornas is also currently available in Rosewood or Curly Birch. |
10/31: Null Knives held a Halloween drop on Thursday at 1 pm EDT. This drop was a restock of the Copper Voodoos, a new Bronze Ghoul, and Arctic Storm Raikous. At the time of writing, the Voodoos, Ghouls, and Raikous are in stock. However, the damasteel Raikous are sold out. |
10/31: TKell Knives introduced two new knives in its Operator Series, the Ops-Hawk and Ops-Striker. Preorders for these two knives are open and they’re expected to ship in three to six months after purchase. These are based on existing versions of the Nighthawk and Striker, but with extended handles and other input from Tier 1 Operators. The preorder for either knife also lets you choose blade steel, handle config, hardware color, and more. Both knives will set you back $325. |
10/31: Benchmade added one of its classics, the Griptilian and Griptilian Mini, to the Customizer. The Customizer brings several bright colors to the Griptilian, like Orange, Yellow, and Neon Green, as well as more subdued colors like Olive Green, Desert Tan, or Carbon Fiber. You can also customize the blade (shape, steel, and finish) and all of the hardware colors for a Grip that’s truly yours. |
Upcoming Drops and Events
11/1: Knafs is releasing a Lander 2 Clip Point today with a gold thumb stud, polished hardware, and a paper micarta handle. Like the original, it still features an S35VN blade steel and Clutch Lock, but it harkens back to knives of yore with the more traditional blade shape. These are available at noon EDT today. Grab one while they last and make your grandpa proud. |
11/1: Big Idea Design is kicking off November proper with its Black Friday sale, which will run from today until Cyber Monday. Just use code BLACKFRIDAY24 at checkout for 20% off your entire order, sitewide. They’re also throwing in free shipping. I hear if you spend enough during the Black Friday sale, Brantley will come to your house and personally tuck you in and read you a bedtime story. There’s an announcement video on the Big Idea Design YouTube channel. Trust me, you don’t want to miss it. |
11/1: OEG EDC is retiring the Marion, his first fixed blade design, tonight. This will be the final drop of the small fixed blade. Several configs will be available, including the option of a drop point or sheepsfoot blade, both in MagnaCut steel with a 2.4” (61 mm) blade length. The Marion also comes with a kydex sheath and an UltiClip pre-installed. While this is Marion's final drop, Eddie says there will be a few collabs to finalize the design send-off. |
11/3: Daily Customs is releasing their best-selling product, the Boker-made AK1, in CPM MagnaCut with two different blade shapes, Reverse Tanto and American Tanto. The MagnaCut AK1 will set you back $173.75 (€160) as a skeletonized knife but you can purchase handle scales and a kydex or leather sheath separately. Also, for the first time, the American Tanto will come with a reversible lanyard tab. |
via Vero Engineering | 11/7: Vero Engineering is releasing the Isotope Mini next Thursday at 11 am EDT. Like the original Isotope, the mini is an integral design (the handle is one solid piece of milled titanium) with a handful of inlay options. The blade on the Isotope Mini is a 3.45” (87.6 mm) drop point high flat grind in M390 steel with two opening options: an inline flipper tab and a milled pocket on the reverse side of the blade. If you’re hoping to fancy it up on an already fancy knife, there will be damasteel options at launch. |
11/8-11/9: The world’s largest suppressed shooting range day, CANCON, is happening in Clinton, South Carolina next weekend. This is an event by the publisher of Recoil and Blade Magazine. Also happening on the 8th at CANCON is the Blade Tactical Knife Show. It’s effectively Blade Show but specifically for tactical knives. Brands like McNees, Pro-Tech, Winkler, T. Kell, and more will be in attendance. |
11/8-11/10: The Georgia Bushcraft Fall Gathering is next weekend. The Fall Gathering is a place to relax and camp with friends while learning new outdoor and survival skills and checking out new gear. There are dozens of classes you can sign up for ahead of time and vendors like LT Wright Knives, Tuff Possum Gear, PNWBushcraft, Wazoo, and many more will be in attendance. I will also be camping all weekend, so come say hi if you’re in the area. |
Carry of the Week
I try to tailor my gear around the philosophies of being simple, classy, and capable. I am a contractor by trade and do a lot of demolition work, but a cartoonist and outdoorsman by passion. I value gear that can be at place in any of the settings I might find myself in, without being overbearing with unnecessarily clunky.

Which U.S. knife company created the first commercially successful assisted-opening mechanism, launching it in their Kershaw ‘SpeedSafe’ knives in the 1990s? |
