Should Kitchen Knives Lose Their Tips? Idris Elba Thinks So...

Idris Elba made waves this week by suggesting kitchen knives should have rounded tips to help curb knife crime in the UK. While well-intended, it’s sparked debate—will changing knife design actually solve the problem, or is this just another misguided attempt at regulation?

While I’m not convinced it’s a practical solution, it's at least acknowledging the real issue—kitchen knives, not folding knives, are overwhelmingly the ones used in violent crime.

Meanwhile, there’s plenty happening in the knife world, from a wild number of big drops to some killer deals up for grabs for President’s Day.

Let’s do the damn thing!

This Week at BDEDC

After nearly four years, we decided to revisit 3D-printed EDC gear. Things have certainly come a long way. Several of the printed pieces surprised me this time.

Also, I’m going live on YouTube at 1:00 PM EST today, so come hang out. We’ll be discussing all the drops, showing off some of your carries, and announcing giveaway winners from the Benchmade Mini Narrows giveaway from December.

Carry Commission Drop

Several new products will Land on Carry Commission in the coming weeks, so be sure you’re signed up for email updates.

We want to take a moment to thank the brands who make everything we do possible:

This cannabis startup pioneered “rapid onset” gummies

Most people prefer to smoke cannabis but that isn’t an option if you’re at work or in public.

That’s why we were so excited when we found out about Mood’s new Rapid Onset THC Gummies. They can take effect in as little as 5 minutes without the need for a lighter, lingering smells or any coughing.

Nobody will ever know you’re enjoying some THC.

We recommend you try them out because they offer a 100% money-back guarantee. And for a limited time, you can receive 20% off with code FIRST20.

Carry of the Week

This is the gear that finds its way into my pocket most often these days. I just acquired the Chaves a few weeks ago. It is one of my grail knives so I was stoked to finally get one in the collection. Everything else is just great quality high performing gear and gets the job done.

Two absolute units have teamed up for a match made in heaven: the Chaves Knives x Pro-Tech Redencion 229 Auto. Featuring the iconic skull clip and an S35VN blade with a choice of blue or black aluminum scales, it will be available at participating dealers on February 15 at 12 PM EST for $300.

Big Idea Design released the second entry into its more affordable Base Line series, the Base Line Capped Pen. Visually, it looks almost identical to the Fountain EDC, but the Capped Pen is a ballpoint pen that takes a Parker-style refill. It comes in five materials or finishes—DLC coated Ti, Raw Ti, Stonewashed Ti, Copper, and Brass—and the project is already fully funded on Kickstarter with 10 days to go.

If you’re looking to save some cash on a new knife, Blade HQ is having a President’s Day Sale with over 600 unique deals. The sale lasts through February 18 at midnight MST. Some notable deals are the Kershaw Livewire in MagnaCut, Demko AD20.5 starting at $120, and a Gerber Armbar Slim for only $17.
