Not Just Knives: Your Weekly EDC Gear Fix
This week's drops and new releases was full of variety with pry bars, watches, drivers, and more...
Hey all,
We all know this industry moves fast and forgets. Hell, we’re all still coming off the high that is Blade Show, yet there is no shortage of drops and events happening this week and next.
However, we mustn’t forget our friends in Appalachia who are still struggling and fighting to get back some semblance of normalcy. There are updates––some positive, some heartbreaking––to the stories I shared last week, but you can still help those in need through the GoFundMe campaigns or this resource created by Blue Ridge Public Radio.

Blade Show West was a blast. Being only two days, it’s tough to get around to everything you hope to see. (Spoiler: I didn’t.) That said, this time, I came home with one of the coolest things I’ve ever gotten at a Blade Show and plenty of other cool gear. We made a video to showcase it all.

We want to take a moment to thank the brands who make everything we do possible:
Upcoming Drops and Events:
10/8/2024: Acta Non Verba, also known as ANV, released a brand new model called the A400. Modeled after their M200 HARDTASK fixed blade, the A400 is robust with a 4.1 in (104 mm) Sleipner steel blade (60 HRC) and contoured G-10 handles and steel liners. It also features their signature Lumidot on the flipper tab. This knife looks mean and the blackout color with dashes of red accents plays into its tactical aesthetics. The A400 is live on the ANV website but they do appear to have sold out at the time of writing. |
10/8/2024: Earlier this week, TOPS Knives released the Wood Nymph. Designed by Bushcraft Kelso, a homesteader who spends more time outdoors than anyone you know, it’s a no-frills, small, minimalist workhorse of a fixed blade. It features a 2.25 in (57 mm) blade in 1095 steel with an overall length of just 5.75 in (146 mm). Small as it may be, you’ll be surprised at how usable this knife is, thanks to its full-grip, tan and black G-10 handle. The Wood Nymph is available now from TOPS Knives for $150. |
10/10/2024: Vero Engineering dropped more Vortex Ti precision drivers at 11 am EDT yesterday in both Stonewashed and a special edition Dark Zirc Blast. At the time of writing, there are still some in stock. Drivers are available by themselves or as Maintenance Kits, which come with a 3D-printed bit holder, three WIHA bits, and an Arc Company pouch to keep it all together. The Vortex Lite, a carbon fiber-infused 3D-printed variant, was also released in a new Slate color this week, but only as a complete maintenance kit. |
10/10/2024: Terrain 365 and Prometheus Design Werx released the CAS OTF (California Special Out The Front) yesterday. It boasts aerospace-grade T6061 aluminum handles, 6AL-4V titanium clip and actuators with Hyperglow inserts, and a completely rustproof Terravantium (dendritic cobalt) blade that measures just 1.925 in (48.9 mm). The CAS OTF will set you back $205 and comes in four colors: Black, Purple, Gray, and Map Green. |
10/10/2024: RZE Watches released a new pilot watch, the Fortitude GMT-S. Under the hood is a Miyota 9075 'flyer' GMT movement and it comes in two different sunburst dials, Sapphire or Silver. Case width and thickness are 41mm and 12mm, respectively, with a 20mm lug width. It also ships on an UltraHex titanium bracelet with quick-release lugs and an on-the-fly adjustable buckle. The price starts at $699, but you can upgrade to the Flight Package, which throws in a Hexaflex strap and Voyage Tote for just $40 more. |
10/10/2024: Last night at 10 pm EDT Vosteed Cutlery released its first Ray Laconico design, the Vallhund. In typical Ray Laconico fashion, it’s an exceedingly clean and classy design, with a 3 in (76.2 mm) flat grind clip point blade in S35VN, plain titanium handles, and a front flipper. There is also a giveaway taking place on Instagram with a winner being selected on October 15. If you don’t want to wait, they’re available for $179. |
10/11/2024: The Arcane Design GREY SPACEBAR returns at noon CDT in three accent options. The SPACEBAR is a combo tool that pairs a pry bar and a mini bit driver in a package that looks like it walked straight out of a sci-fi film. It’s made from a 7.5mm (0.3 inches) thick slab of 6AL4V titanium and has an overall length of 4.75 inches (120.65 mm). It comes with a set of WIHA micro bits, two of which can be stored in the magnetic drawer around the back. |
10/11/2024: Given that OEG stands for One-Eyed Ghost, it only makes sense that Eddy over at OEG EDC does an annual Halloween Drop. This year, it’s taking place tonight, Oct. 11, at 7:30 pm EDT and he’s dropping a Halloween edition black and orange cerakote Keystone and Spooky Inlay Good Luck Pry Bars. |
10/11/2024: Tuff Possum Gear released an updated version of one of my favorite accessories to add to any zipper pull: CitizenE GlowNutz Micros. I’ve talked about GlowNutz before but these Micros are considerably smaller at just over 0.5 in (12.7 mm). GlowNutz Micros come in a two-pack for $10 in either plain or “Frosted” to give them that beloved donut look. No matter which version you choose, they will be some of the brightest GITD indicators you've ever used. Also, you can use code BESTDAMNEDC for 10% off the entire Tuff Possum store. |
11/16/2024: Titanium pry bar legends LynchNW has teamed up with the gents over at Smoky Mountain Knife Works on an exclusive pry called the Hammerhead. Drop time is 10 am EDT on Wednesday, Oct. 16, and 12 variants will be available, such as Volcanic Fade, Elemental Green, Heat Seeker, Ice Blurple, and more. Each pry comes with a deep carry titanium clip and will set you back $199. |
10/18/2024: Mark your calendars because the Jack Wolf Knives Bionic Jack drop is happening next Friday at 2 pm EDT. This knife shares DNA with the Cyborg Jack slip joint, but the Bionic Jack is a frame (or bolster) lock with a front flipper, featuring a 3.28 in (83.3 mm) hollow ground clip point S90V blade. Priced at $349.99, it comes in five configs: CamoCarbon Watermelon Sugar, Kirinite Liquid Gold Blackwash, Fat Carbon Frost Hand Satin, Titanium Stonewash, and Knife Center exclusive Crystalized Titanium Hand Satin. |
10/18/2024: August Originals is holding a Halloween drop next Friday at 8:30 pm EDT. Just in time for spooky season, this drop will feature Frankentrays and Tallboy Prybars with Spiderweb Inlays. There will also be Sugarjaws and Tikijaws in the drop. And if you’re a fan of small, pocket-sized fixed blades, August Originals is tossing in a few variations of the Peyton Cleaver with OD green, orange, or black G-10 scales. | via August Originals |
10/18/2024: The NYC Windup Watch Fair is next weekend (Oct. 18-20). With room for over 110 vendors, all of the best watch brands will be on the scene, including some of our personal favorites like Lorier, Marathon, Oris, Vaer, and more. But if you think this event is explicitly watches, you’d be wrong. Other brands from around the EDC space will be in attendance as well, such as GiantMoust Knives, Pro-Tech, Vault, Nomatic, and Able Carry. If you’re in the neighborhood, it might be worth dropping in. |
Open Preorders
The Big Idea Design Ti Pocket Knife II Kickstarter has only three days left. I managed to snag one of these at Blade Show West and take it from me, it’s sweet. Kickstarter pricing is $250 (and $230 for additional add-on knives) but after the campaign wraps up, the MSRP is expected to be around $295. If you’re on the fence, you only have a few more days to snag one at the introductory price.
The Manganas Steel Aurelia is one of the cleanest designs I’ve seen this year. While it doesn’t quite look like a Chris Reeve design, it has the same air of minimalistic utilitarianism. It’s a no-frills, get-the-job-done style folder, and I’m a fan. It has a 3.6 in (91.44 mm) 63 HRC MagnaCut clip point blade, dual pivot (which works with Skiff bearings and washers), and a really slick pocket clip. The Aurelia preorder is currently open for $280 and will run through the end of the month.
Speaking of clean designs, the Mr. Mr. Designs ÆON doesn’t even look real or possible at first glance. All the hardware is hidden on the show side, and there’s just a pivot screw and a screw for the milled clip on the reverse side. The mill pattern looks fantastic and the design is just sublime. A preorder is open for this knife for a surprisingly reasonable $265, though there is an expected wait time of six to seven months.
Carry of the Week
This is (almost) everything I carry when not at work.
Recently, I haven't felt the urge to rotate gear––I just swap the knives out for a Civivi Elementum Utility because it's better for my electricians job, as well as carry a pair of Knipex Cobra Pliers.
The only thing missing from the pic is a microfiber handkerchief. My wallet, notebook, and keys are kept in a bag.
The slider is new and I don't think there is a better premium slider for the money. I highly recommend it and I'm very glad to have finally found my ideal fidget after looking around for a good year.
Giveaway Winner
As promised, I randomly chose a winner for the inaugural giveaway for a one-off Wicket XL. The winner is Andrew Blanchard. Stay tuned for more giveaways! 🤘🏻
From the Community
A lot has happened in the last week, so it’s possible you missed some really cool things. Looking back, here are some of the best videos you might’ve missed.
Blade Show Award Winners
You may not know it, but Big Idea Design has a YouTube channel and it’s highly entertaining. They vlog their cross-country treks to events like Blade Show West, show off their new and upcoming products, and even shoot fake ads in the bathroom. The face behind the channel, Brantley, is unhinged and shouldn’t be allowed to touch a camera, much less steer the ship. But here we are and we get the pleasure of watching the chaos inside that beautiful man’s head come to life through video. Anyway, Brantley made his way around the show floor and spoke with some of the award winners from the show, which is a great peek behind the curtain of the knife industry.
Alec Steele Makes Titanium Damascus
Ever wonder how titanium damascus (timascus) is made? Well, much like damascus steel, it’s done by forge-welding multiple layers of different grades of titanium together and it creates some insane color variations and patterns. Now that Steele has successfully made timascus in his shop, he says he wants to experiment with even crazier versions like mosaic timascus.
Adam Savage’s Modded Casio Royale
Much like you or I, Adam Savage is a gear nerd. He made an everyday carry video 11 years ago and, fun, random fact, he and I were both featured in the same video on everyday carry by Playboy eight years ago. More recently, Savage opened a package he received from a fan at a recent convention. A fan built him a custom Casio World Time (Royale) with a custom NASA face replacement, an orange strap, and custom blue LEDs. It’s honestly sick and well worth the watch.
