Why I Never Use My Gear
Or why everyone thinks I don't...
I’m not going to lie, November was one of the busiest months of my life. Between all the drops at Carry Commission, launching Gaslight Industries, making some seriously enormous gift guides for Best Damn EDC, and smoking all the meats for Thanksgiving, I didn’t sleep a whole lot.
But we’re back, and we’ve got plenty to catch up on and some seriously cool stuff to finish out the year.
Let's do the damn thing.

This Week At BDEDC
Deep Cuts
Everyone thinks I keep my gear pristine and never use it. The truth? My team won't let me near anything before they photograph it because I destroy everything instantly. We dive into that conundrum and some cool new releases, like the Arno Bernard Turaco and my third knife design, the Carry Commission Camp Mule.
Gift Guides
It’s that time of year. Gift guides galore. I’ve already made two—one for the EDC items that I think make great gifts this year and one for truck gear. But there’s one more coming soon, focusing on budget-friendly items that will still arrive before the big day.
One Item Survival Challenge
About a month ago, we were at Georgia Bushcraft when our good friend Ben Petersen challenged me. He told me I should make a video without thinking about it and without planning. So I made him give me a prompt. What he came up with was a fun little thought experiment about being on a plane that’s going down, you land on a remote island and you lose everything in your carry except the one thing you managed to grab.
What’s the one thing in your carry you would make sure you had in that scenario? Is it your knife? A multitool? Something else? I went around Georgia Bushcraft and asked a handful of survival experts what they would grab.
It was a nice change of pace and a really fun video to make and watch. It definitely won’t be the last one like this either. Give it a watch and let me know what your one item would be.
Gaslight Industries

At long last, several months after initially planning to launch, we got Gaslight Industries off the ground and the first batch of Jerry Can Lighters out the door. They sold out very quickly.
Fortunately, I have some good news. We’ve decided to squeeze in one more drop in 2025. It will be pretty limited, since we weren’t planning on it, but we’re going to do our best to do another drop (sometime this week) and get them all finished up and out the door to arrive before Christmas.
If you want to know when that drop is happening, be sure to sign up for email updates over at Gaslight Industries or stalk us on Instagram.
Carry Commission
This week is a big one for Carry Commission. We’re launching our very first in-house product, a knife designed by yours truly, the Camp Mule. We partnered with LT Wright Knives to have the knife made, and they absolutely crushed it.
This knife, as the name suggests, is meant to be a do-it-all knife around the camp. It’s a medium-sized drop point fixed blade with a flat grind A2 tool steel blade. The handle is a natural micarta with brass pins and a brass lanyard tube. And the Camp Mule ships with a pocket sheath made by JRE Industries and an UltiClip. These are dropping tomorrow, Tuesday December 9, at 2:00 pm EDT in limited quantities.

Proof Razor x Carry Commission
Last month, Carry Commission teamed up with Proof Razors out of Montana to bring to life one of the coolest projects we’ve done to date. We took their single blade razor, added our signature topographical pattern, the ass logo, and a copper anodizing.
Sure, it’s might just seem like a simple single blade razor, but these things work exceptionally well, have stupid simple blade swaps with an off-the-shelf razor, and will last a lifetime. It also comes with a leather pouch for storage and travel, and that pouch stores a handful of spare blades.
We’re restocking these razors on Thursday at 2:00 pm EDT and this will be the last restock for a while, so don’t miss them this time around.

Carry of the Week
I saw Taylor talk about a wallet carry so I thought I would share mine. Copper was moms favorite metal and I guess I picked up the affinity for it. This carry is definitely inspired by her.
The wallet was a gift from her in the final year of her life and I like that I can grab it and my phone and be out the door reasonably prepared.
The flashlight was my first piece of copper gear from years ago. I have others, but I like that I can fit this one into the pen loop and operate the tail switch without removing it from the wallet. Also, flashlights in the tool pockets make these wallets to bulky, moving it to the loop makes it ride better.
The RUK is awesome, pocket utility knives are a must and the copper patina makes this one mine. I use it for tons of stuff like cutting stray strands, breaking down Ikea boxes, cutting down a memory foam mattress to fit in the camper, and opening beer. It's my work horse.
The Sebertool was found in moms junk drawer and I love how thin it is for a pliers based multitool, making it perfect for this kind of wallet carry. I am the type of person that feels naked if they leave the house without pliers so this set up is great for me, too bad they don't make them anymore.
I do not write regularly but having a pen when needed is nice and the Narwhal is so small and inconspicuous that keeping it in the wallet is easily worth it.
